The History of the Famous German Christmas Market

Each year during the Advent season, Christmas Markets continue to be held in many German-speaking regions.

The origins of these markets trace back to the Middle Ages, when autumn fairs were organized for citizens to stock up on meat and other essential goods for the winter. The first documented Christmas Market appeared in the 12th century, and by the early 20th century, it had evolved into a cherished pre-Christmas tradition. These markets typically close before Christmas Day.

A typical Christmas Market is filled with numerous kiosks set up along city streets and squares, offering a variety of baked goods and regional delicacies, such as Printen, gingerbread, Berlin doughnuts, Spekulatius, and Stollen. Visitors can also enjoy sweet treats like chocolate figures, cotton candy, roasted almonds, and hot chestnuts, along with hearty dishes. Popular drinks include the traditional "Glühwein" (mulled wine) and "Weihnachtsbock," a rich-tasting seasonal beer. Additionally, many stalls feature Christmas decorations, tree ornaments like glass baubles, poinsettias, tinsel, as well as handmade crafts such as nativity scenes, candle arches, and incense figurines.

Most Christmas markets feature a vibrant mix of artistic and cultural entertainment. Visitors will often find a St. Nicholas, Santa Claus, or the "Christkind" handing out small gifts to children. Occasionally, groups of actors will portray Christmas scenes or fables. Additionally, orchestras or theater troupes may perform on stages or even from the balcony of the town hall.

The large Christmas tree, adorned with festive lights that glow brightly against the winter's darkness, adds to the enchanting atmosphere of the market.

Christkindlmarkt in Winnipeg

Since 1985, with the help of many volunteers, the German-Canadian Congress plans a Christkindlmarkt every year. This is meant to uphold German traditions and to collect funds for cultural events and purposes in Manitoba throughout the year. For example, the Congress often issues scholarships for skilled students, awards grants for study trips, supports the German school and other Educational institutions that relate to the German language or culture.

Traditionally, many different local bands perform at the Christmas Market every year - contributing to the festive atmosphere. Below is a small selection of the many German and English songs you can hear at our market.

The German Canadian Congress is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-sectarian organization. Our Purpose is to cultivate and promote the German Language, culture, and customs of German-Canadians in Canada within the scope of Canadian Multiculturalism.
Founded November/02/1985.
